Comment: (-) Inflation is now endemic and is likely higher than what the official statistics convey. We believe that (1) heavy moral suasion by the authorities in the aftermath of the large early January devaluation, and (2) the government’s forceful expropriation of businesses and closure of hundreds more for alleged price gouging might have deterred many sellers from immediately passing through the higher costs triggered by the large devaluation.
