UPDATED: Earthquake 5.4 Richter Scale hits Caracas Today

Updated May 9, 2009

The following message is circulating the Internet:

Globovision has been served papers by CONATEL (the telecom regulator). They were told this could lead to 72 hr. suspension of operations and perhaps even indefinite closing. The reason being that Globovision acknowledged that there had been an earthquake and announced it over the air before the government had a chance to do so. Globovision's General Manager Alberto Federico General managerRavell states that Globovision tried its best to find out what the government broadcasters had to say and there was no response. VTV had a prerecorded program with Chavez on it running. The website of the Venezuelan seismic agency showed nothing. After a reasonable time, they decided to go to the U.S. Geological Survey website, which had already posted the figures for the seismic event. Only after Globovision broadcast the facts did the government entities respond (they obviously copied Globovision's information. Ravell says he will fight back in the national and international courts.
