Venezuela's Political Disaster - March 26, 2006

"[The General Assembly] Decides that the Council will be responsible for promoting universal respect for the protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction of any kind and in a fair and equal manner."

Ambassador Taylhardat explains that Chavez abstained voting on this issue as Belarus and Iran did, and the United States voted against the resolution because it failed to disallow nations who are violators of Human Rights to become members of the Council.
